Underworld & Iggy Pop - Teatime Dub Encounters EP [Translucent Vinyl] Teatime Dub Encounters EP [Translucent Vinyl]

Underworld and Iggy Pop announce Teatime Dub Encounters due for release on July 27th via Caroline. The 4 track EP is the result of a few clandestine hotel room recording sessions that began a few weeks after Underworld and Iggy Pop each released their last albums on the same day (3/18/16). It is neither historical nor a tribute to past work; it is the work of artists in motion, engaged in a process that they both bring to all of their work – one that uses spontaneity as a spur for creativity.

In the two years since he released his last album, (which made its impressive debut on the Billboard Country Albums chart at #4), Jinks and his band have relentlessly toured and cultivated an immense and loyal following among enthusiastic music fans who crave the kind of authentic country music on which he was nurtured. The title track and theme of the album celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and pays tribute to the often overlooked “lifers, the struggling strivers, working long after the day is done…the last of the great generation.”

OTEP - Kult 45 [LP] Kult 45 [LP]

Proudly carrying the torch that artists like Zack de la Rocha, Woody Guthrie, Chuck D, System of a Down, and Kendrick Lamar lit up with their politically charged lyrics, the talented singer, rapper, poet, illustrator, author, and activist OTEP SHAMAYA has proven to be one of the prolific, loudest and most sincere voices in protest music! On KULT 45, the powerhouse eighth studio album, OTEP expertly fuses aggressive and pervasive metal molotovs, imbued with eruptive rapcore, that captivate the mind and body, not only with lyrically-embraced social enlightenment, but with poignant messages regarding the current political and cultural conditions in America. On hymns such as 'Halt Right' and 'Molotov', OTEP thrashes out with brute force and skillful pun, clearly calling out against the return of odiferous hate groups. With the more emotionally charged 'Shelter In Place’ OTEP speaks out against school shootings and gun violence while also commending the strength and courage of survivors and the passion and devotion of the Parkland high school students who organized and set forth the MARCH FOR OUR LIVES movement. Later the album segues to a beautiful ballad called BRAVE that seductively beckons listeners to abandon their comfort zones and go after their dreams. "Things needed to be said and songs needed to be written without fear so to bravely reflect the times." Shamaya explains that KULT 45 is the most authentic album OTEP has ever released. The album closes out with a cover of the classic song "Wake Up" - a tribute to the legends, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE.

ShadowParty - Shadowparty Shadowparty

ShadowParty are a band united by a fairly unusual circumstance, each member is a latter-day addition to a huge band, and here they’ve combined as synthpop’s answer to The Avengers. The nucleus of the group formed when Josh Hager and Tom Chapman met in Boston, Massachusetts. Josh is a former member of The Rentals who currently plays guitar and keyboards in Devo. Tom Chapman is the former bass player of Bad Lieutenant who followed frontman Bernard Sumner to New Order in 2011 when the band reunited for a series of charity gigs. Completing the group are Phil Cunningham, Marion founding member and New Order’s guitarist since 2002, and drummer Jeff Friedl, who plays with Devo. Newly signed to Mute, ShadowParty’s debut – recorded in Boston, LA, Manchester and Macclesfield – is an album that nods to those groups but exists in its own right entirely, a synth-pop album with guitars and strings, and guests including the incomparable vocalist Denise Johnson (Primal Scream, A Certain Ratio) and The Verve’s revered guitarist Nick McCabe. It’s the sound of a blast. ShadowParty burst through your speakers; pulsing electronics get swept away with lush orchestrations, bold ‘80s-fused beats get carved up by haunting guitars and vocals tower through each moment, whispering sweet harmonies and unspoken despair. ShadowParty will be released on CD, LP, and digitally on July 27, 2018 via Mute.

Kenny Chesney - Songs For The Saints Songs For The Saints

In every artist’s career, certain albums stand out as a significant piece of their soul. For Kenny Chesney, Songs for the Saints is that album. Co-produced with Buddy Cannon, the 12 tracks mark a deep dive into “the places that save you.”“So much has happened since I went off the road in 2016,” Chesney explains. “Andallof it, in one way or another, has ended up on this record. It’s special to me because of what it says – to me, and for me – about life, the world around us, how fragile it all can be and about somehow still finding the best parts of you, and moving towards them.”Due July 27,Songs for the Saints marks the 8-time Entertainer of the Year’s first album on Blue Chair/Warner Bros. Nashville. In many ways, this new home for his work mirrors the things that inspired this album.“Leaving a place where I’d spent my whole career was both scary and exciting,” Chesney concedes. “There’s that rush of not knowing anything about how this company works, and digging in. But there’s also a special thrill of being around people who truly understand what you’re doing and who are excited to be part of this music. It’s inspiring in all new ways when you have people match your own passion for the music.”Recorded over the last several months, Chesney had a notion about what his record was going to be long before it galvanized intoSongs for the Saints. “I was at a turning point in my life on so many levels, and then Hurricane Irma hit the Virgin Islands.”“But this album isn’t about St. John, so much as it’s about what happened toSt. John and all those islands you didn’t see on the news,” continues the man called “The People’s Superstar” byThe Los Angeles Times.“To just see the devastation and what that does to people is one thing, but then there’s this courage and resilience people find…”“This is not a literal record,” he cautions, “but it is an album about the refuges we all have, how temporary life is and the way we navigate to better places, dig in and face the destruction. And sometimes, we learn to own our wild hearts in the process.”Beyond the euphoric “Get Along,” the banjo and people-positive message tempo track hovering outside the Top 10, Chesney wrote or co-write five tracks. As with any release from the East Tennessee songwriter/superstar, there are songwriters getting their first cuts, surprise collaborations, an obscure jewel and the emotional fabric that makes the No Shoes Nation a place rich with heart, tenacity and the will to embrace life on its terms.“I feel like Iknowwhat this album’s supposed to be, and I know how much it means to me,” he says. “I wanted to get it just right, before we set a release date… and I think we’ve got it. I’m just glad we’ll have it out in time for me to play some of these songs this summer before theTrip Around the Sun Touris over.”

Peter Holsapple - Game Day Game Day

• First solo album in 21 years from the veteran musician and songwriter. • Holsapple co-founded The dB’s & worked with R.E.M. on Green tour and writing/recording of Out Of Time. • Contains 13 tracks + three bonus tracks. One would think being co founder of one of the world’s most beloved power pop bands, The dB’s, would be enough for one person. But, Peter Holsapple just had to tour with R.E.M. and Hootie & The Blowfish, join Continental Drifters, and collaborate with acts like The Troggs, The Julianna Hatfield Three, Better Than Ezra, and so many more. Perhaps that’s why he’s releasing his first solo album in 21 years, he’s been a busy, busy man. And, as Peter himself says “And it’s really ‘solo’, too! I played and sang 99 44/100 ths of the notes on this record.” Game Day contains 13 new tracks, a bonus track, and two “super bonus tracks”—Holsapple’s critically acclaimed single “Don’t Mention The War” / ”Cinderella Style,” originally released in 2017. Game Day is prime Holsapple, whose recording career spans nearly 5 decades. It contains all the hooks, clever lyrics, and deft instrumentation one would expect. As he says in the packaging, “Today, with all of the hard competition in the music business, it’s almost impossible to come up with anything totally original. So, I haven’t. But I had a lot of fun making Game Day, and I hope it comes through when you hear it.”

Tarja - Act II [3LP] Act II [3LP]

No other voice and artist influenced and basically created the female fronted symphonic metal genre as much as Tarja. A pioneer in goth- and symphonic metal, the classically trained Finn rose to fame with the band Nightwish, whose face and voice she had been for 9 years. Tarja, whose vocal range goes as far as three octaves, started her solo career after stepping out of Nightwish in 2004. Filmed during Tarja's world tour 'The Shadow Shows', during which the influential heavy rock singer circled the world 7 ½ times and played over 200 shows in 40 countries in front of 1 million people, 'Act II' consists of the singer's very intimate 75 minute set filmed and recorded live at the Metropolis Studio in London, UK and the breathtaking live performance of one of her shows in Milan, Italy, and previously unreleased interviews and photo galleries. The theatrical rock adventure 'Act II' combines two incredible, yet slightly different live performances on video: The first chapter, 'Metropolis Alive', has been filmed two months prior to the release of Tarja's 2016 success The Shadow Self . 20 winners from all over Europe were lucky to witness Tarja's intimate, yet rocking 75 minute set at renowned Metropolis Studios in London, UK where the singer performed songs from her then unreleased album for the first time in front of an audience. Available on 2 CD, 3LP (180 Gram Vinyl) + Download Card, DVD, BluRay and Digital

Drivin N Cryin - Too Late To Turn Back Now [LP] Too Late To Turn Back Now [LP]

The year is 1997. Gas cost $1.19 a gallon, and Drivin N Cryin is a three piece band comprised of founding members Kevn Kinney on vocals/guitar and Tim Nielsen on bass/mandolin, along with Jeff Sullivan on drums. If you’re like me, you probably haven’t heard much about their Kosmo Vinyl (The Clash, Sex Pistols, and more) produced (Casino Studio, Atlanta, GA) self-titled album. The record had a short life on radio, with their cover of John Denver’s “Leaving on a Jet Plane” getting some airplay in Alabama. Why this album went relatively unnoticed is a mystery to me. Maybe it was their return to their hometown, independent roots, after having left Geffen Records, that resulted in the album’s release with little momentum. What I do know for certain, though, is that Drivin N Cryin stayed true to their sound and who they are. A little grit, a little roots. Now, 21 years later, the record has a title, new cover art (courtesy of Kosmo Vinyl himself), and momentum. With newly remastered songs, the album still holds true to who they are as a band. It’s even being released on vinyl for the first time. A quote from tour manager, Scott Munn, gives insight into the climate surrounding that time. “The band was firing on all cylinders going into the studio, and there was a feeling that *this* was their truest representation and the record they had always wanted to make." Have a listen for yourself, and let me know if you solve that mystery. "I remember the songs sounded great already, and then Kevn Kinney brought in his secret weapon, Michelle Malone. Her recitation on 'Passing Through' was stunning, timeless, and signaled that the record was totally complete." - Scott Munn “...I'd been around enough musicians, and in enough recording studios, to know what didn't work. I wanted to make a record that sounded, and felt, like the Drivin N Cryin you would go see live. If I could do that, then I knew it would be good. All told, we spent about 2 weeks at Casino, and I think we got what we wanted." - Kosmo Vinyl

Deaf Wish - Lithium Zion [LP] Lithium Zion [LP]

There’s an inherent flaw in the perennially alternating “rock is back” and “rock is dead” arguments: they are based on the idea that rock music is a logic-based choice a person consciously chooses to make. Contrary to the critics who are looking to suss out cultural trends and movements, the decision to play loud, distorted, unabashed guitar-rock isn’t a strategic move but a higher calling (or curse, depending on one’s point of view). Some might say the pursuit of rocking out via deafening amplifiers, crusty drums and a beer-battered PA is a spiritual one, an affliction that either strikes or doesn’t. Few groups today embody this sentiment like Melbourne’s aptly-named Deaf Wish. They’re more likely to ask a fellow musician what they do for their “real” job (for one, guitarist Jensen Tjhung works as a builder) than talk shop about publicists, ticket counts and online promotions. They’re a grisly rock group and they’ve already signed to Sub Pop, which is to say they’ve already succeeded beyond their wildest dreams, so anything that comes after (performing in strange new cities, meeting like-minded souls, maybe even selling a t-shirt or two) is a bonus. And if they come to your town, you would be wise to clear your calendar. Lithium Zion is their fifth full-length album (and second for Sub Pop following 2015’s Pain), and, while it’s a rare case that a group’s fifth album is their best, it may in fact be Deaf Wish’s finest. Their previous albums were recorded in makeshift studios - a wise choice for capturing the hazardous riffing, chemically-stained vocals and fiery rhythms conjured by a group such as this - but this step toward a slightly more professional sound only enhances their power. The record opens with “Easy”, a languid rocker in the rich Australian tradition of groups like X and The Scientists. From there it’s onto “FFS”, a moody downhill rocker sung by guitarist Sarah Hardiman that confirms Deaf Wish’s relation to fellow Sub Pop employees like feedtime and Hot Snakes. “The Rat Is Back” is tense and epic; “Hitachi Jackhammer” pays a brief and noisy tribute to Hitachi’s second most notable device (you’d be forgiven for assuming this song is about vibrators). Lithium Zion is a veritable buffet of garage-punk energy, post-punk pathos, sardonic wit and the fearlessness that comes with Aussie rock, a natural consequence for anyone living on a continent teeming with grapefruit-sized spiders and man-eating mosquito swarms. As has always been the case, the whole group shares vocal duties, even drummer Daniel Twomey (you know the band is slightly unhinged if they’re letting the drummer sing). Hardiman and Tjhung are as ragged and hairy as ever, chugging along as though krautrock was trying to speed past the late ‘70s but got caught in the sticky grasp of punk. Such is the way of Deaf Wish, a group destined to write songs that are simultaneously stupid and sublime, vulnerable and ferocious, and play them with the unbridled intensity they demand. Anyone serving a life sentence to rock will surely concur.

Mogwai - The Hawk Is Howling [LP] The Hawk Is Howling [LP]

Mogwai's sixth studio album is, as one might expect, a brooding and atmospheric collection, full of the band's exceptional use of dynamics and creation of hypnotic soundscapes. The Hawk Is Howling is, however, partly more reflective than previous releases, perhaps sharing more in common with 2001's Rock Action. Instrumentally the band have somewhat branched out, utilising light synthesizers on tracks such as 'The Sun Smells Too Loud'. For the first time since their debut Mogwai Young Team LP, Andy Miller was on production duties. Recorded in notable Glasgow studio Chem 19 (run by the Chemikal Underground record label), this release sees Mogwai simultaneously stepping forward musically and returning to their roots.

Andrew Combs - 5 Covers & A Song EP [Vinyl] 5 Covers & A Song EP [Vinyl]

Driven by lyrical content, nostalgia and the desire to cover some of his favorite songs, Andrew Combs started recording 5 Covers & A Song with the intention of showcasing one of his favorite artists, Loudon Wainwright III. “4 x 10 sparked the initial idea to record a collection of covers. Jordan Lehning (producer) and I had a bonding moment over this tune and how perfect we thought it was. In fact, we even thought of doing the whole EP of just Loudon songs. In my opinion he is one of the few writers who can cover the territory of familial relationships in such a shrewd and comfortable manner.“ The idea evolved from a singular influenced EP into an record that showcases songwriting and stylistic influences as well. “I wanted at least a couple of these tunes on the EP to be nostalgic for me. I was a huge fan of The Strokes’ two first records when I was in high school. My friends and I used to dress like them — I had a white belt and white chucks I’d rock every day! I actually have Radiohead to thank for getting me into music. I remember the exact moment when my friend passed me a burned CD of Amnesiac in history class one day. I was probably 14. It was my first Radiohead record, and I worked back in their catalog from there, loving everything I heard. They still mean a lot to me as a band. Everything they do pushes into new territory — music, lyrics, artwork, etc... “ The idea continued into including some of his favorite songwriters/musicians. “We all know that Blake Mills is a tremendous guitar player, but it’s his knack for songwriting and arranging that keeps me coming back to his records. Lucinda is the queen of songwriting in my book. No one else can portray a picture like her. She’s up there with Tom Waits, Townes and Guy Clark when it comes to words. I wanted a love song on the EP — something that came from a feeling of adoration. It’s a simple bed of music that her words dance on, but the build of the tune helps portray the yearning for someone. I couldn’t be happier with this version. I’d like to think Lucinda would enjoy it as well.” The final track on the album, “Expectations” is the sole original track on the EP. “This is a tune Sarah Siskind and I came up with on a rainy afternoon here in Nashville. We got to talking about relationships. I remember repeating a quote from a friend, saying, “you only get what you expect,” meaning that if you have expectations about someone close to you, positive or negative, they most likely will come true in your mind. I guess it’s sort of about that.” 5 Covers & A Song is a snapshot of the influences that helped shape Andrew Combs as a songwriter as well as a display of how he has honed his craft.

The Ballroom Thieves - Deadeye [LP] Deadeye [LP]

Astronauts, Etc. - Living In Symbol [LP] Living In Symbol [LP]

Living in Symbol is an ode to ambiguity, the future, and saying ‘so long’ to the known. A member of the last generation to experience life before total interconnectedness, Anthony Ferraro (digitally known as Tony Peppers) aims to be a bridge between two very different realities. The spirit of change is especially pronounced in California’s bay area, where technologies dawn and disruption is the noblest goal. Critics and advocates of all stripes write columns and fill talk radio hours with their analyses of the times. Ferraro is a funny case: a sometimes Luddite with a romantic streak, he would probably be a doomsayer if it weren’t for his being situated in the middle of it all. As it happens, he ended up writing a generative music algorithm that sold on auction at the Smithsonian for $5,000. His take on tomorrow is nonjudgmental, meditative, imaginative. It keeps away from unqualified hope or outright alarmism, choosing instead to embrace the indeterminacy as food for dreaming. Ferraro’s friendship with Chaz Bear, who co-produced the album, began modestly enough: Bear walked into the coffee shop where Ferraro worked while attending UC Berkeley. The two became friends, and when Ferraro graduated the following summer, he signed on as touring keyboardist for Toro y Moi. Musical bonds were forged over the next few years, and the pair began collaborating on what would become Living in Symbol. Sonically, the album weaves its influences into an alien drapery. “The Border” introduces Latin psychedelia to a groove à la David Axelrod, setting the stage for a vocal performance that manages to be equal parts Lee Hazlewood and HAL 9000. On “The Room”, a Borgesian story gets dressed up in an eerily graceful string arrangement reminiscent of Les Baxter. And “Who I Talk To” nods to George Harrison in a soft rocking arrangement that supports Ferraro’s ghostly croon. Living in Symbol is a series of rooms, a choose-your-own-tomorrow story. Step in and peer through its open doors. Pressed on black vinyl; includes lyric sheet, sticker sheet, and digital download.

Michael Romeo - War Of The Worlds, Pt. 1 [LP] War Of The Worlds, Pt. 1 [LP]

Michael Romeo is best known as the guitarist, chief songwriter and all-around main man behind the progressive rock titans Symphony X, whose daring mix of neoclassical shred, orchestral textures and wildly elaborate concept pieces has placed the band at the forefront of new metal thrill seekers. The release of his new solo album, War of the Worlds, Part I, should further his reputation as one of the world’s preeminent guitarists and composers of adventurous prog-rock. An ambitious 10-song disc, it blends bracing classic metal with textures that pay homage to film score giants Bernard Hermann and John Williams. For fans of Symphony X who have been waiting two decades for an honest to goodness Michael Romeo solo album (not counting his 1994 demo recording, The Dark Chapter, which was released in several countries), the arrival of War of the Worlds, Part I will be cause for celebration. War Of The Worlds, Part 1 will be released worldwide on July 27, 2018 on Mascot Label Group's prog imprint Music Theories Recordings.
